Kids Beating Cancer Defied the Odds at its 2021 Hats & Heroes Ball

Kid’s Beating Cancer (KBC) is a nonprofit organization helping children fight cancer by providing support, resources and research advancements. Founded in Orlando almost 30 years ago, KBC has raised more than 25 million dollars in total toward these efforts and now supports children globally.

In September, KBC hosted its annual Hats & Heroes Ball, with this year’s theme of “Defying the Odds — Let Cancer Go.” The unforgettable evening included gourmet cuisine, exquisite silent and live auctions, and a captivating performance by Idina Menzel. The award-winning charity event raised more than 1 million dollars to save lives today and discover tomorrow’s cure.

Each year, Appleton works with KBC to create a video featuring a child whose life has been impacted by the non-profit, which is showcased at the ball during a grand reveal on-stage.

This year, we were introduced to Scarlett, a young girl who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Scarlett and her family faced various hardships during her journey. Following an unsuccessful bone marrow transplant from her little brother, the Orlando family explored different treatment options. Scarlett’s mom says the hardest part was spending seven weeks away from their family while participating in a clinical trial in Cincinnati, Ohio. Shortly after arriving back home, the doctor called to tell them that a donor match had been found and they were able to give Scarlett another chance at life! Throughout her treatment, Scarlett baked cakes and even started her own business, Sweet Sensations. When she heard about another young girl who needed a bone marrow transplant, Scarlett was able to pay forward some of the kindness that had been shown to her by baking a cake for the girl.
