What the New FAA Policy Change Means for Device Usage During Flights

On October 31, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officially updated their in-flight policy to expand device usage during takeoffs and landings. While the changes are minor, it stills offers a few more minutes of device time for folks addicted to Candy Crush and worried about having an Alec Baldwin moment while the plane takes off.

You still can’t chat away on your cell phone 10,000 feet in the air. Mobile service and data use is still prohibited. But use of electronic devices, already allowed during longer phases of flight, will now expand to takeoff and landing so long as said devices remain on airplane mode.

And that’s pretty much it. Individual airlines may still have their own policies regarding device usage and others may be slow to adapt the policy change, so if you’re traveling this weekend, this may not have taken affect.
