Stayin’ Alive: Hands-Only CPR Class

According to the Orlando Fire Department, Orlando is currently ranked the second safest city in reviving victim rates. To assist Mayor Buddy Dyer in his efforts to make our city the safest in the country, we recently participated in a hands-only CPR training course.

We learned that more than 350,000 cardiac arrests happen in the United States each year and 70 percent of out-of-hospital arrests happen at home. Unfortunately, only about 46 percent of victims get the immediate help they need. Through our course, we gained valuable skills and knowledge needed to provide life-saving assistance in case of emergency.

What to Do

  1. Call 9-1-1.
  2. Check to see if the person if responsive.
  3. Begin chest compressions to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive.” (That’s right, music saves lives!)
  4. Use AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) if available to shock victim’s heart in an attempt to restore its rhythm to normal.

Easy enough, right? Hands-only CPR can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival. We were so glad to get some hands-on experience and become more confident in our life-saving abilities during this course.
