Kids Beating Cancer 20th Anniversary Hats & Heroes Ball

For the last 22 years, Kids Beating Cancer has provided resources and support for children with cancer and related life-threatening diseases. Regardless of financial means, the organization focuses on providing support for children treated at the Kids Beating Cancer Pediatric Transplant Center at the Florida Hospital for Children. To date, the non-profit has served over 7,500 children and raised over $11 million.

Saturday, Kids Beating Cancer hosted their 22^nd annual Hats and Heroes Ball. Hosted at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, the venue was transformed into a 1920s’ speakeasy. All money raised from the event goes to support children and their families. The soirée included a “Hero Walk” in which local children fighting and beating cancer were brought on stage by local celebrities.

The highlight of the evening was seeing Mikala Barnes, a 17-year-old from Lake Nona, who was diagnosed with leukemia at age two. Appleton has close personal ties with Mikala and has been following her progress for several years now. She has become an important part of Appleton, and seeing her on stage with her father was an unforgettable experience. Appleton donated the production of the video, which featured Mikala, who is now on the road back to good health after receiving a bone marrow transplant from an anonymous donor. Kids Beating Cancer provided support for Mikala and her father throughout their journey both emotionally and financially. As well as producing the heartwarming story, Appleton was a sponsor of the gala. A team of Appletonians sat proudly at our table in the audience.
