Don’t Be A Bully! Zebra Coalition Launches 2013-2014 Anti-Bullying Campaign
Bullying is a major, often detrimental, hurdle faced by young LGBT+ students today. In fact, a recent survey by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network found that the vast majority of LGBT+ students in Florida hear homophobic, sexist and negative remarks about gender expression on a regular basis. Appleton Creative is honored to announce that Zebra Coalition, in conjunction with Orange County Public School’s (OCPS) Student Assistance and Family Empowerment (SAFE) program, has coordinated an anti-bullying campaign now set to run through 102 schools within the district.
As an avid supporter of Zebra Coalition and the anti-bullying cause, the Appleton Creative team was eager to help conceptualize and visually craft the campaign materials. These include anti-bullying posters with unique QR codes set to direct parents, teachers and students to a special landing page online. The page includes specific sections dedicated to bully prevention information for both students and adults. The campaign aims to change negative preconceptions and alter the mindsets of those who may not understand how hurtful their remarks can be to LGBT+ students.
Stirring media interest upon release, the campaign was covered by News 13, Wesh Channel 2 News, the Orlando Sentinel and Orlando Weekly Magazine. Mere days after launch, Zebra was awarded $625,000 in federal grant money from Center for Drug Free Living—also an Appleton Creative client—to address perceptions of the harm of alcohol, prescription drugs, and marijuana use among LGBT+ youth. These efforts only serve to fuel more positive change within the community. Philanthropy is in the fabric of Appleton Creative culture.
