Derricka’s Corner ~ Appleton’s Resident Teenage Talks Trends
How to Speak the Language of Twitter
Derricka here, and I’ve got a question for you: Are you overwhelmed with all the new terms, phrases, and acronyms that are constantly popping up across social networks? Trust me, I understand it can be hard to keep up with all the unfamiliar terms if you aren’t on-line 24/7. Luckily for you, I know a thing or two about social media. In fact it’s part of my daily routine. So relax. Take a breath, because your girl Derricka has got your back! Today, I’d like to focus on:
If you were to follow me on Twitter you’d notice that I love to re-tweet (RT). A re-tweet is exactly what it sounds like – a resending of someone else’s twitter message. And I do it all the time. Not only do I re-tweet all my friends, but celebrities as well. Re-tweeting is fun because you can add your personal point of view on any subject.
If you want to tag a friend in a tweet, you simply use the (@) symbol before that person’s name. This symbol is used when you want to specifically for the tweet to be noticed by that person. Although it’s different from direct messages (DM) which are used when you want to send a private message to someone without letting the world know.
Have you heard of hash tags (#)? Us Twitter peeps like to use this symbol after a topic or phrase. Think of it like a keyword. For instance, when I went to the Big Time Rush (BTR) concert, I posted on Twitter “Having a blast at the BTR Concert #WooHoo” because it’s the title of one of their songs and it was also a trending topic. That means that my tweet gets seen by everyone who is interested in the subject matter of #WooHoo.
Before I go, if there’s one thing I want you to take away, it’s to never commit the social media terminology (SMT) bungle of using hash tags (#) on Facebook. It’s uncalled for, and just ridiculous. That’s right. I’m calling all you hash-taggers out! It’s ridiculous. Please stop. Seriously.
Until next time, thanks for tuning into Derricka’s Corner… ciao!
