Are you a job or career-type of person? 5 tips to find out

In the corporate world, the terms career and job are often used interchangeably; however, there is a big difference between the two. Technically and figuratively these terms convey separate meanings.

A job, in the technical sense, is an activity performed to earn money. This can require education or special training, but is not always necessary depending on the employer. A job provides work and income safely, is not always long term, and has a lower salary range.

A career on the other hand contains goals that are reached through dedication and effort over the course of a lifetime. These almost always require special training of some sort. Careers may generate opportunities that involve taking risk, as it is part of your life. They are long term and provide a higher salary range than most jobs.

Figuratively, your job will provide you with a sense of being needed because you constantly have work in front of you and you are being paid for your efforts. A career, however, will provide pride and a sense of achievement. It will make you step outside your comfort zone at times and will ultimately offer a stable income for your family and household. “Your success in a career will be measured by your willingness to embrace challenges and change with a view toward finding solutions to problems,” says timesunion.com.

According to the Huffington Post there are essential questions to ask yourself to decide if you are in a fulfilling position. The top 5 are:

  1. Do I know what is expected of me at work?
  2. Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right?
  3. At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?
  4. In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?
  5. Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?

Where do you belong? For many, having many jobs throughout life is rewarding and compensation enough. For others it is a lifelong search for that sense of belonging and peace of mind.
