Appleton Goes On-Location to Support Kids Beating Cancer

Beating cancer is not an easy fight – especially for a child. Appleton Creative recently welcomed Kids Beating Cancer as a new client, and one of our first projects was an on-location shoot at Florida Hospital for Children.

At the hospital, Appleton’s video team interviewed two young patients undergoing treatment for cancer. The first interviewee, 15-year-old Mikala, explained how Kids Beating Cancer is helping to make her hospital visit better. KBC helped Mikala find a non-related bone marrow donor, and Mikala recently underwent a successful bone marrow transplant. Another way that KBC can brighten a day in the hospital is to decorate incoming patients’ rooms in a special theme personalized to the child. Mikala says she picked a ‘space’ theme because she wanted to give KBC a challenge! Mikala is also a budding artist – our kind of girl! Using supplies brought in by her father, Mikala produces in-room art and sells her pieces to hospital staff. She even created a pattern that KBC turned into a scarf that is available for purchase online.

The second child we met was Mohamed, who turns 9 in just a few months. Mohamed is in the process of going through chemotherapy, and his latest round went well. His stay at the hospital was a busy one, thanks to all the Lego sets KBC provided, and Mohamed will get to visit Legoland after he gets out courtesy of KBC. Cancer isn’t the only thing Mohamed is beating – he is Florida Hospital’s undefeated champion of Call of Duty!

Our last stop on the shoot was a visit to the site of the almost complete Kids Beating Cancer Pediatric Transplant Center, which opens next month. It was a great way to end the day, and served as a reminder of how important cancer research really is.

We can’t wait to get started on editing this video, which will be shown as an inspirational piece at Kids Beating Cancer’s gala this fall.
