A Project Beyond the Orlando Experience

Terminal C has finally taken off!

Orlando International Airport (MCO) has recently finished a major project. After 40 years of planning and a much-needed 2.8 million dollar investment, Terminal C is now open.  
 
The terminal is designed to be the first LEEDv4 airport campus in the world, setting the example for green building design and innovative construction. With 1.8 million square feet of building space and 3.5 million square feet of airfield space, Terminal C solidifies MCO’s position as the largest and busiest airport in Florida and the 7th largest airport in the country.
 
The 15 new gates come equipped with innovative architecture, an eco-friendly ambiance, and a wide variety of retail and dining concessions. MCO has established new technology to enhance safety, security and the overall traveler experience.

Besides the addition of 1,000 high-definition display boards throughout the terminal, other improvements include:

  • Automated Individual Carrier System (ICS) tote baggage system 
  • 100% facial recognition and iris scans for arriving and departing international passengers 
  • Virtual Ramp control for airline ground operations 
  • 100% automated screening lanes at TSA checkpoints 
  • The world’s first fully-deployed Early Bag Storage robotic system
  • Advanced, touchless restroom fixtures 

Although the addition of the terminal has been a long time coming, the wait was well worth it. Terminal C will host a future stop for SunRail and the highly-anticipated Brightline, which will connect passengers to South Florida and other Central Florida counties. 60 million visitors are expected to travel through MCO annually, with 12 million passing through Terminal C alone.

Big Projects Require Big Thinking. 

Appleton has been the Agency of Record (AOR) serving Orlando International Airport for over 20 years. We have created everything from logos to full-scale marketing campaigns including brochures, outdoor advertising, wayfinding maps, impact reports, annual reports, videos, and so much more. 

One of our personal favorite projects was developing marketing for their “Paw Pilots” comfort dog program.

Our extended relationship with MCO is why the team was given exclusive access to capture the project in all its beauty. To depict the magnificence of this project, our team created a commemorative book and video that acknowledged the building process and illustrated it in a unique way.

It took a team of Good Apples to get this plane in the air. 

Documenting a process that is still ongoing is like building a plane as you are flying it. Much of the content we collected needed construction elements edited out or replaced by renderings. One thing is for sure, delivering a project “Beyond the Orlando Experience” was hardly a simple task. However, it was only right that this book embodied all the architectural beauty and innovation that MCO has to offer.
