Jennifer Graven, senior graphic designer and puppy parent to Wally the Wonder Dog, is celebrating her Appleton anniversary. April marks Jennifer’s seventh year at Appleton which gave us an excuse to pick her brain about the most creative agency in Orlando.
Jennifer’s relationship with Appleton began during her time at the University of Central Florida (UCF). A positive interaction at Intern Pursuit (UCF’s internship fair) led to a successful interview, subsequent internship and ultimately a career as a graphic designer at Appleton.
Along with her graphic design responsibilities, Jennifer also serves as a social media manager and the in-house photographer. Her unofficial title includes the role of “cruise director” because she helps facilitate team-building activities including, potlucks, costume contests and office Olympics. This sense of team spirit is part of the reason why Jennifer enjoys Appleton’s company culture — to her, Appleton is like family.
During her seven years at Appleton, Jennifer’s proudest accomplishment is Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando’s rebrand because of her love for animals and the project’s wide variety of mediums. She worked on everything from brochures and print ads to social media and environmental branding. As far as her favorite project type, Jennifer enjoys creating ad concepts. Notable award-winning concepts for our creative agency include ones for John Michael Exquisite Weddings & Catering, Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association and Appleton’s 25th Anniversary ad.
Jennifer also appreciates Appleton’s dedication to philanthropic work, especially the Appleton Awareness Gallery which showcases different art exhibits to bring awareness to local community issues. Along with the opportunity to work on a diverse set of client projects, Jennifer says, “We get to use our time and talents to benefit so many great causes and I’m always proud to be a part of it.” A particularly memorable moment for Jennifer was during the Pet Alliance gallery show when a portrait she painted of her pup, Wally, was auctioned off to benefit a charitable cause.
Appleton’s charitable spirit isn’t limited to the office. Dragon Boat is another favorite of Jennifer’s because it inspires her to see Appleton employees transform from a ragtag group of athletes to a well-oiled paddling machine that brings home trophies year after year.
To aspiring graphic designers, Jennifer emphasizes the importance of gaining experience through internships. “There are so many things you’ll learn in your internship that you’ll never learn in school.” Jennifer also encourages young graphic designers to diversify their talents, thus increasing their value, with skills in photography, web development or social media. “The knowledge gained from real-world work in internships and an extensive portfolio is what will get you a job after graduation.”
