Derricka's Corner ~ Appleton's Resident Teenager Talks Trends

Posted on: July 5th, 2012

While I was surfing the internet and procrastinating my summer reading, I found something that kinda caught my eye – in a good way! I found a peacock in an orange and burgundy background. First thought that came to my mind was “HOLY SMOKES, A PEACOCK!” – but then I read what was underneath the peacock and laughed hysterically. It was the funniest and most clever thing I’d ever read besides Shel Silverstein’s Where The Sidewalk Ends. Take a look and see if you understand.

If you understand, kudos to you! If you don’t, seriously? This particular image is called the “Thespian Peacock” or the “Performing Arts Peacock.” It’s one form of memes, which are such a big trend!

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the defintion of a meme is: an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture. Now, I don’t understand that too much, but I understand the actual memes. They’re funny and witty. Memes are literally everywhere these days. In the eyes of a typical teenager (me) I try not to take life too seriously. That’s what memes do, they give you a reason to laugh and just not to worry about the world’s problems.  That’s why memes are so popular and why teens are constantly saying “forever alone” and most likely why we’re far more sarcastic than we used to be. It’s not just teens though, everyone is getting warped into the wonderful world of memes. If you haven’t checked them out by now, please do before they go out of style as fast as silly bandz.
